But the cases where you read or write files based on the input are
fairly easy to identify and will often need more screening that just
being valid file names. I don't see how you would expect "<" to tell
you the file name is invalid other than through error. To me that's a
non-expected error.

What VALIDATE checks is really minimal and you can do the same with a
bunch of locate and verify stages.
