I did try with a desktop client (Solaris) something like:

    open vm.marist.edu
    cd academ:pipeline/eweb./
    binary
    quote type e
    quote mode b
    get pipe.module
    close

    open vm.local
    binary
    quote type e
    quote mode b
    put pipe.module
    close

    quit

... and it works, correctly repairing the module.  I don't
know what your proxy (or client) may do with these commands.
