I would be delighted if that happened.  In a case that I can't
reproduce in a simple test, it was leaving the original file
unmodified.  Perhaps I should have experimented with "FINIS * * *"
or the like.  As it is, I've settled on:

   ERASE TEMP FILE FM
   PIPE ... > TEMP FILE FM
   ERASE REAL FILE FM
   RENAME TEMP FILE FM  REAL FILE FM

Thanks, and thanks to John Hartmann for his ALLOWEMPTY suggestion.
Alas, as I reported initially, our systems programmer declines to
put SFS in production.
