What no one has mentioned so far is probably the best **long-term**
solution -- install any one of:
- "Programmable Operator" (AKA: PROP - see: z/VM V5R2.0 CMS Planning and
Administration {SC24-6078-01}); which is free with z/VM,
- CA Technologies' "VM:Operator" (not free), or
- IBM's z/VM "Operations Manager" (not free)

Using any of them, you can trap the 'LOGOFF' messages on the OPERATOR ID
to trigger an automated "action routine" (usually an EXEC that you write)
to do whatever you want - in this case send a note to your ID. PROP is a
great way to get your feet wet. VM:Operator and Operations Manager are
full-featured solutions.

For your described need any one of those is a bit of overkill. But...
once you have one of those set up on OPERATOR, you'll find all sorts of
terrific automated responses that you can direct based on messages issued
to OPERATOR. Your human Operator can logon to another ID to run the
system, or not... see the publication for ideas on how to set up PROP.

Notification on logoff?

I tend a service machine that mostly runs unattended, processing
work requests that are sent to its reader (email, actually, from
UNIX systems.) Yesterday, someone complained that his request had
not been processed. The service machine had crashed 32 days before!

I can't diagnose it from the spooled console log -- our site purges
spool files after two weeks.

So, I get a weird idea. In PROFILE EXEC:

   CP DEFINE PUNCH ... /* Not 00D */
CP SPOOL ... to RSCS CONT

Use NETDATA, etc. stages to create an email image addressed to
me, and leave it in the CONT spooled punch.

When the server crashes, the punch will be closed and the
RSCS will deliver the email to me.

o Will this work?

o Is it abusive of system resources?

o Is there a better way?

Thanks,
gil
