I sometimes use HOLE as an initial stage merely to simplify editing
of portrait-style pipelines:

PIPE hole ,
    | append foo    ,
    | append bar    ,
    | append wombat ,
/* etc.  */
... so I can shuffle/insert/delete stages with no worry about
pesky dangling "|" and ",".

(No, I don't pay for CPU cycles. And silicon is cheaper
than carbon.)
