Gil,

I do something similar, for the same reason, but without using HOLE as the 
first stage:

PIPE (END ? NAME whatever) ,
   | stage 1 ,
   | stage 2 ,
   ...

That makes it very easy to add a stage before the first stage (e.g JEREMY).

I sometimes use HOLE as an initial stage merely to simplify editing of 
portrait-style pipelines:

PIPE hole ,
    | append foo    ,
    | append bar    ,
    | append wombat ,
/* etc.  */
... so I can shuffle/insert/delete stages with no worry about pesky dangling 
"|" and ",".

(No, I don't pay for CPU cycles.  And silicon is cheaper than carbon.)
