You have probably found by now that the SUBSTR OF is defined in the
inputRange syntax variable. It is more generic than just SPEC, so you can
also XLATE SUBSTR 2-* OF W1 for example. And you probably found through
PIPE AHELP MENU the *SYNTAX page lead you to the definition of the
inputRange syntactic variable.

If only things were as simple as Kris suggested that you use PIPE AHELP
(and the Author's Edition) for Plastic Pipes and the other one for the
built-in plumbing of z/VM 6.3. Back in the early 90's when CMS Pipelines
was first integrated in VM/ESA and the two books were developed, the
writers decided to substitute some of the syntactic variables. As a result,
the syntax of XLATE for example does not refer to inputRange but lists
several forms (but not all).

Late 1997 when CMS Pipelines 1.1.10 release was integrated into CMS, a lot
of new function was added. Not all of that eventually landed in the CMS
books because some of the substitutions got too tedious. In the Author's
Edition of 2010, there are no revision codes on pg 227 with the SUBSTR
definition, so it works with the indoor plumbing.
