Actually, when the file exists XEDIT sets WIDTH and TRUNC to fit, just
like on CMS. The point was when creating a file in the ring that does
no exist on disk and will not be written.

The 255 was because I specified it on the XEDIT command in my pipeline
filter (as a default width for displaying data). I only changed it to
do a BFS file because you asked.

A former co-worker used to create files by copying a single wide file
to prime the pump. That would work for this pipeline thing too.
