I suspected, but wasn't able to confirm from the manual.  Perhaps I just kept 
missing it?
But yes, that was EXACTLY the answer I needed - my sample is working now.

The input field is particular to the reading station, so you have to specify 
one at each:

  specs b: word 1 . select second a: word 1 . if a¬==b then ...

If you're already using all 52 letters, of course, this is more than just an 
inconvenience.
