It's probably time to invent an "env" stage that gets data from GLOBALV and CP 
environment variables rather than making everyone write their own. 
 
 Also look closely at the REXX VALUE() bif as it supports setting and getting 
GLOBALV variables.

  Well, if you care about LASTING or SESSION based GLOBALV and only interested 
in
  obtaining the value, you could read the file yourself.  It's a fairly simple
  format. (cols 1-8 groupname, 1-byte length of "name", name, 1-byte length of
  value, and value)  It's not an official API, so if IBM ever changes it,
  (we should be so lucky) you are on your own.  That leaves out in-memory
  GLOBALV which is probably what you want.
  I thought I had a stage that did something with it, but I can't find it right
  now.
