It depends on the design of the CMS. There are certainly newer generation CMSs 
that support CSS and modular layout elements that allow unlimited flexibility.

With AssetNow we adopted templates and widgets. Templates are "pages" which you 
associate with any category or specific page in the site structure.

Widgets are just like X/HTML tags and typically provide dynamic elements. You 
can create your own widgets or customize those provided. 

So there is really no limitation on visual implementation as my earlier post 
re: Eric Meyers light weight slide show demonstrates.
