I can't touch the start and end of the page :( That ridiculous, contradictory head section and the ugly javascript at the end of the page are two of my biggest pet gripes with the CMS. That's why I've got <link> and stuff in the body.
I've been pushing fixes for these bugs for some time and it has been corrected in version 7, but we are stuck on 6 for this site at the moment and there is really nothing I can do at this point. Almost all the validation problems are from doctype confusion, mixed html/xhtml mark up in the head and unescaped ampersands on links to the document managment system and the stats javascript at the bottom. I've spent a lot of time with this problem and would love to fix it if I could.
