Long time lurker, first time poster ;-)

I have a lot of experience with CMS, but only in big stuff (government,
fortune 500 companies etc).  If the people making the magazine are 'serious'
then you might have to look at a more costly solution... something that was
specifically designed for that kind of thing, like RedDot.  There are
packages out there that manage content across the whole enterprise (ie
create and store and version an item of content in one place, then use it
automatically on the web, in printed materials, for email marketing etc).
These systems handle versioning, usage tracking, etc.
