the issue is: i've tried, but was never successful at building from a 
snapshot.
perhaps that has grown less challenging over time and i could try again.

since i have to trundle it all off to one of compaq's test hosts out in 
the middle of the aether (if they're even still there) in order to test 
things, my plan was to wait until there was a binary release.
