My experience with maintaining debs of CL code is similar -- it's too
much like hard work.  There's some work in progress in cCLan CVS to
autogenerate packages from simple tarballs (and, incidentally, a scheme
to do useful tarballs, too) from ASDF system descriptions; while I make
no claim that it's finished (or even terribly useful) in its present
form, it may be worth a look (in the "many hands make light work" kind
of way).
