I experienced a similar thing a long time ago.  In my case it turned
out not to be CMUCL related (or better, CMUCL evidenciated - whoa!
where's my English this morning? - a NFS problem).  There is some
setting in NFS that may prevent you from actually getting the file.

I don't remember the details, but the problem was there.
