Up to recently my throttle has, if anything, been on the loose side. However
this last Wednesday I had to use a great deal of force to increase the revs
from idle and a similar force to return to idle. I plan to take a close look
at the cable and clips, but has anyone experienced this who can guide me to a
likely cause?

I just changed my cable the other day. It had reached the point where my wife could no longer change lever position and I had to force enough to worry about breaking the cable. I found that some previous owner had installed a clamp/adjustable bolt affair that would collapse the outer cover onto the inner cable to adjust the friction and thus the effort required to move the throttle lever. I tried slacking the bolt/nut off but that only worked for a day or so. When I removed the cable to change it I saw where the bolt had broken the outer casing allowing water to get in and rust the metal sheathing. The replacement cable on my 36 was a 9 foot universal made by Teleflex in the US and cost about $40. It's a bit of a pain to change it but at 5' 10" and 160 lbs I was able to get to where I needed to be to change it.
