Thanks for suggestions so far. I will go check the vent and will replace the
joker valve. Keeping a spare is a good idea.
Although I agree there should only be one discharge hose full of black water
to deal with, I'm thinking wave action when sailing will continually cause
the hose to be filled from the tank until the tank level is low enough,
assuming you're taking water out of the bowl.

Steve, 

Crappy Job! I had black water returning to the head on my previous 1981
36KCB and current boat. Salt from urine crystallizes on your joker valve and
the joker valve leaks back. Ideally we are supposed to flush clean water
thru but it never happens on the Great Lakes when you are trying to conserve
holding tank space. 
Two ideas for you are: 
1. Change the joker valve annually, I could never get 3 years out of a joker
valve. (I keep a spare on board and change it when required.) 2. Install a
shut off valve on the holding tank intake line. ( I installed a second
holding tank and the control valve I used has an off position. Not a fix but
helpful.)
