Larry Had the same issue a couple years back. In addition to the tired threads there were small stress cracks so existing threads were never going to be tight again. My solution, which to date has been effective, was to buy a L-head fitting like http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId =111521&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=50632&subdeptNum=50 646&classNum=50648
This gets the opening nice and low in the tank. Got one that was same size as waste hose. Put a big bead of 5200 (a personal favorite despite what others may say) and inserted it from the inside (the L- head keeps the opening at the bottom unlike a regular mushroom type fitting. Tightened the nut on the outside lightly and let the 5200 cure for a day or two (may be a good idea to get a small tube of the 5200 fast set- you don't need much) and then did a final tighten (being sure to turn the nut and not the fitting- important to keep the low part down. 5200 is really just a custom washer in this case as it won't stick well to the tank hence the importance of not squeezing it out before it sets up. Suppose you could use a standard large rubber washer of some sort. The fitting has a hose barb on the end for the waste - insert (careful not to stress the tank and fitting too much) and you are back in biz. Kim Brown Trust Me!!! 35-3 BTW it has been blowing like stink (25-35) the last couple days here due to Sandy and it didn't even come close to Fort Myers- so good luck to all in the NE. ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Sat, 27 Oct 2012 10:55:16 -0400 From: "larry dck" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Stus-List Holding tank fitting leak Message-ID: <D2866EDC986D4B8EA5340745FEFD27FC@LarryNetbook> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" While winterizing my boat,35 MKIII, I noticed that the threaded elbow fitting on the bottom of my white plastic holding(waste)tank was loose and dripping slightly. When the fitting wouldn?t tighten up,I found the threads on the elbow and in the tank looking tired.( stripped)I plan on trying a new fitting, but intend on applying an adhesive/sealant to the threads when installing. My first instinct is to mix up west epoxy with colloidal silica and make a permanent connection of it. ...But then remembered some of that white plastic can be very slippery, when it comes to epoxy adhering to it. I am now contemplating 3m 4200 or even 5200 caulking instead. Anyone on the list have some advice on this? This is a job I only want to do once if you know what I mean.
