Ken ( and later contributors),
Sorry, my mistake in terminology. It's not a gate valve. A bronze ball
seacock - seems to be in good shape. Still turns easily and definitely
turns on and off. Danny - thanks for the input on how to remove the
plastic hose barb. I'll try it.

And there is the question as to why you would want to keep the existing
thru hull if it is really a gate valve. An old gate valve is very
unlikely
to actually shut off if you try to close it and if you do get it to close
it probably won't open again, usually the stem snaps off inside
leaving the gate stuck shut.
Time to get the Marelon Catalogue out...

If it isn't a gate valve but is a proper sea-cock, carry on.

I have two house batteries. No separate starting battery yet.
I use a Xantrex Link 20 to monitor voltage/current on each battery and it
appears the display has gone belly up. IE I can only see voltage for each
battery, no current. Does anyone have trouble shooting ideas/options?
I looked at the Xantrex Linkpro as a replacement, but I need to buy two -
one for each battery, add an additional shunt, blah, blah, blah.
Any other recommendations for a replacement?
thanks,
Pete

Pete,
I have the Link monitor + 2,500 watt inverter/charger on Calypso. It was
manufactured by Heart Interface just about the time Xantrex was acquiring
them.
A few years back Calypso's link display failed. At that time Xantrex
still had a manufacturing/engineering/repair facility near Seattle. I was
able to have a chip replaced and a software upgrade by the repair
facility. Since then that whole facility was closed and the work moved
offshore. A company named Outback that manufactures alternative energy
inverters is now operating out of that building.
Xantrex customer service and technical support was less than helpful but
they did offer up several "reset" type commands that I had not tried in
the past. My guess is Xantrex has lost the ability to service the older
Link systems. Since the last repair the "smart" regulator went TU and I
now use a 3 stage that is compatible. I sent the failed regulator to a
company (tech in a small shop) in Florida to see if it was repairable.
After a few conversations regarding the possible issues he disappeared.
I have some Link diagnostic info and a copy of the manual somewhere in my
files if you are interested. The display will lose a digit or so if left
on the same setting all the time or in direct sunlight. To compensate I
leave the display on "Batt 2, amperage" which limits the number of digits
energized. When I want to check the battery voltage I switch the display
over to read the value. This mostly works but it is a short term
solution.
If you choose another system I am interested in how it works out.

See if the wiring came off the shunts. That would disable the current part

Well, I started out looking at a fixer-upper of a 35 Mk I, then looked at
Mk IIs, then a 39 (we didn't care for the layout for cruising as a
couple).
Glanced at some Mk IIIs--C&C really seems to have got it right with each
of
the 35s, didn't they? About the same time a friend found me a 40 to look
at. Way out of my range, but a lovely boat. A couple of months later, the
boat's owner and I have come to an agreement, and next week she's mine!
Hull number 143, built in 1981, most recently called Thunder, (based in
East Greenwich, RI) and before that Reverie, she'll be coming to her new
home in Newport. Cruising plans include getting to Maine this summer.
I've been lurking on the list and once in a while chiming in when I
thought
I had something useful to add, but I've been impressed with the scope and
depth of knowledge here. So what should I be looking at attending to
before
launching in April? I know to pull the tie straps and check they're bedded
well and for crevice corrosion, and there are couple of survey items to
attend to, but nothing serious. What else? Suggestions for projects or
improvements?
Cheers

Might be a bit more than needed or wanted but the Blue Sea VSM 422
monitors a lot of systems, AC, DC, amphours consumed, tank levels, etc.?
Of course you have to buy the sensors you need.

Congrats!
I'd start below the waterline - thru hulls, smile, bottom prep. Then the
rig.
Rod rigging? It's supposed to be re headed every 10 years.

If you are going to replace think about a third battery, solar, inverter.
I've seen lots of complaints about the new Xantrex stuff on CF fwiw.

Thanks, Dennis.
All ball valves. Have to free up the cockpit drain valves. The surveyor
says I'll get another couple of seasons on the cutless bearing and it has
a
MaxProp that I like a lot! I looked at the strut and discussed it during
the survey. The surveyor (Dwight Escalera of Executive Marine who is a
friend and very knowledgeable) said everything was fine there. I'll
monitor
it during the summer, though.
