I changed the shift cable on my 33-1 1976 with the atomic four. It went
fairly well but I do recall taking a 1/2” open end wrench and heating it to put
a 90 degree bend in it. Still have that in the bottom of my tool box

Subject: Stus-List 33-1 A-4 Transmission Linkage Woes

Took the day off to tinker on the boat. The transmission linkage had stopped
working for forward. Reverse works fine on the venerable Atomic-4. For forward
I have to hop below, remove the companionway steps, and push the shift lever
into forward. This got old, even with crew.
When shifting to forward from the pedestal the shift cable bulges downward
where it exits the sheath(?). This is a span of about 4 inches of cable and 5
inches of solid rod which connects to the shift lever.
Very tight quarters. Seems like I'd have to remove the engine to replace the
shift cable. Major bummer.
I twisted the end of the cable 180 degrees and reattached it to the shift lever
and that might have fixed it. I can now get it into the forward detent from the
pedestal, but time will tell...
