Or just to have a more flexible section of hose near the pickup end, that
white or beige wire reinforced stuff that was used back in the day lasts a
long time but it does not bend to easy

Subject: Re: Stus-List Bilge pump pick up hose

On our boat, it was built with white plastic hose for one of the bilge
pumps. The section that was down deep in the bilge became brittle, probably
due to the occasional presence of a little engine oil. It became brittle
enough to crack off completely. Perhaps the same thing happened to your
hose and they replaced the brittle piece with rubber hose?

The other day I was at the boat and there was a little water in the bilge
that was lower than the float switch. I raise the float switch by hand and
it will start the pump and clean out most of the water still standing in the
bilge. On this day something different happened, the water pump kicked in
but the water was shooting out of the pick up hose. I pulled the hose out,
the hose is mostly pvc under the floor boards, and at the end there is a
piece of wire reinforced rubber hose about 8 inches long attached to the pvc
pipe. I had never seen this before as it sits under the permanent section of
the floor boards. There was a piece of black tape attached to the end of the
rubber hose that slides over the pvc pipe. I am assuming that this is the
end of the bilge pick up system. Anyone on the forum have a similar
arrangement or understands why the black rubber hose? Better yet, does
someone have a system that they would recommend. I was thinking of adding a
plastic bilge strainer.
