The mast brackets are in integral part of the scanner platform, and will
vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. They should be available, but you
might be best served to figure out where you want to mount the scanner
before you invest in the mount.

It is probably a JRC 1000 (for Japan Radio Corp.), which was an entry level
unit when it was available in the 90s. Probably sold for around $900 back
then. I know a couple of folks that have JRC radars (though not the 1000)
and I have a JRC 3000 unit, and they seem to be satisfied with performance
and durability. I paid about $450 for mine, which was used and the cable
from radar to scanner had been cut. The new 30 ft cable was pricey - around
$200 - so make sure everything is there before you buy.

Regarding the scanner location: I'm going to use the boat for cruising, so I
asked cruisers about their radar installation before I installed mine. The
consensus I found was to not put the scanner on the mast. Position high on
the mast does give you maximum range. But it will tear up your headsail, and
your headsail can damage the scanner. In addition, you decrease the ability
to see close in targets because the radar looks over the top of them - so
you may be half blind when entering a harbor in fog or darkness. The
preferred position seemed to be on a pole or backstay mount. My scanner is
on a pole about 14 feet off the water, which gets me a decent range and good
positioning on small targets like buoys and pilings within a quarter mile.

Had I to do it over again, I don't think I would have bought the used radar,
though I'm satisfied with it so far. For a bit over $1000 you can buy a new
16-mile Furuno radar with 18 or 24 inch dome and an LCD display. I think the
model is something like 1610 or 1620. You get a new radar, Furuno is about
the best radar there is, and lower power consumption - plus a display you
can put out at the helm station.

Subject: Stus-List RJC 1000 Radar

A fellow boater took a 'RJC 1000 Radar' unit off his boat (well, not
completely, more on that later) and if offering it for sale. I said I was
interested. He bought it with the boat but it was never powered up to a
battery.....we assume it works....he said I can take it and try it out on
our boat before he would accept payment.....his idea of trying it out was to
power it up and someone hold the 'dome' or 'scanner' on the
pulpit. Not my idea of trying it out unless I was surrounded in lead.
He hasn't given me a price, just said make me a reasonable offer. I am
wondering what you listers think would be a 'reasonable offer'.

There are four (4) 'dome' or 'scanner' mounts riveted to the mast....he
doesn't want to remove them....each mount has 3 rivets X 4 = 12 small holes
in the mast....appears the 'dome' or 'scanner' fits in the
mount(s) with a pin....I offered to fill them with self taping SS screws but
he doesn't like that idea.....he doesn't want them removed. Are these
mounts easy to find and are they expensive?

I don't want the radar that badly but I wouldn't mind getting it for a good
price....I don't want to insult this guy but on the other hand, he doesn't
want to sell an integral part of the 'mount'.

Any and all comments appreciated.
