Well, I think you've eliminated a leak in the tank if you only get the smell 
after you run the engine. 

I would get a wad of paper towel and run it over the fuel system and frequently 
check for pink diesel (don't use pink paper towel). Obviously, the fuel will 
run down to the lowest point, but finding it will give you a place to start 
looking. Do you have a white oil-sorb pad under the engine? Those are useful 
for alerting you to problems with drips from the engine. 

On the fuel filters, I would change the Racor at least annually, the the one on 
the engine every other year.
