Edd,
Look for the white sheets/pads that only absorb oil.  They actually do
absorb water but only retain oil.  You can actually wring out the water
without losing the oil.  I put those on top of some dry-deck panels.  That
way any water that has to move through the engine well won't soak the
pads.  My 24 year old engine has a few minor oil and diesel leaks.  I also
keep a white oil absorbing boom in the bilge as extra insurance.
