had one for many years....by chance do you have a check valve in your
engine exhaust system   which stops back flow of exhaust water ? if so
check if you can hear valve clicking open &closed...if not a noise then
supporting pin in valve is worn out  & when engine started  valve sit up
&partially blocks exhaust outflow..get some black soot out exhaust & little
power...have come across this a number of times in past years.....there is
 large opening on check valve with some straining can be opened.....feel
around  & see if check valve is fastened and freely opening
&closing.....takes a really sharp atomic 4 mechanic to catch & repair
before taking whole system apart &replacing most of discharge
system.....this is not that hard to do...some check valves undo in reverse
to normal opening direction....replacement valves run about 75 to 100
dollars in real plumbing outlets not local hardware chains...be sure to get
correct metal as well as seeing pin for valve same metal  if not plumber
can easily replace pin for you...
