Get a raw water strainer and install it as close to the intake as you can.

Last year after the boat sat for 3 weeks, I started the engine and no water
in the exhaust.... shut down and investigation eventually led to "Duck Weed"
which had solidified into a plug in the hose. I've been thinking since that
day that I should add something.................
