Provided you have a keel stepped mast and either a baby stay or forward lower shrouds to cause the mast to bend.

 

On a boat like my 25, with a deck stepped mast and neither forward shrouds nor stay, all tightening the backstay accomplishes is tensioning  the forestay and take the curve out of the luff of the genoa. Flattening the main is done with outhaul and vang.
