Hi Ron, hard to visualize ( and explain ) but with the line going down to the gooseneck it does not affect the pick point. Wherever the weight of the mast is transferred to the loop is the effective pick point. If from there you have a larger or smaller loop, tie it off a few inches away or to the bottom of the mast it does not change. One way to imagine it is with the mast vertical the weight of the mast will transfer down to the gooseneck, just like you were picking it up from there. However, there is no sideways force that the knot has control over - ie it cannot stop the mast from tipping over. Once the mast starts leaning over the loop picks up the load, but only sideways. The final position would be with the mast 100% horizontal. If the loop was right at the balance point the mast would transfer all the weight to the loop and the line down to the gooseneck would have no force on it. So it is the loop, and the position of the loop in relation to the balance point, that is important.
If the mast is "just" leaning over that is not a major issue. If it is trying to tip over with force that is a problem. It could be that your mast is top heavy. The balance point on Windburn is just below the spreaders, a couple of extra pounds up high would change that. My anchor light is very light plastic, the spinnaker blocks are fairly light and I run the spin halyards off ahead of time. I have a Windex, Raymarine ST50 MHU and a VHF antenna all of which add up to a bit of weight. Below the spreaders I have a long CB track for the spinnaker and a couple of cleats. The halyards are looped and tied off to the mast. I think C&C had different suppliers for the masts, the boom was raised 1' around hull number 507 and the mast head casting could be a different. It would be a pain if your balance point is just above the spreaders, does make the process harder. Michael Brown Windburn C&C 30-1 Date: Thu, 9 Jan 2014 09:06:29 -0800 (PST) From: "Ronald B. If the load is transferred to the gooseneck (or some other lower spot) by the hold down line, won't that also transfer the "pick point" to that location as well? Doesn't the loop just become the rotation point? ?That would explain my dilemma with the balance when I tried that method. ?If not, what would explain my balance problem? Ron Wild Cheri C&C 30 STL
