Thanks to all for the suggestions on the exhaust riser. I've concluded that I'm being stupid - but not stubborn. The space age high-temp paint looks like a fail. Even after the triple baking, it seems to rub off. Maybe that's sacrificial. I think I overlooked a primer.
Somewhat unrelated, the A4 wouldn't start this weekend after the new, cheapo galvanized riser was bolted in place. Spark = yes. Carb draining = ugly crud. (Might be related to the riser failure.) So for now, I'm focused on getting the engine running again. After that, I'll replace the riser properly. Thanks again to all, Bob M Ox 33-1 Jax, FL
