Plexiglas is just a brand name for acrylic plastic, which is most commonly sold in sheets. The thinner sheets of plexi are usually made by an extrusion process. Thicker varieties are made by casting. Casting makes a stronger, more optically clear and undistorted product. It is important to make sure that whatever you use has additional UV protection added, as all types of acrylic, whether cast or extruded, craze pretty rapidly when exposed to the sun for extended periods. If it isn't labeled as UV protected, it isn't.
