Is it important that the hole in the deck lines up with the hole in the
cabin liner?

On my MKII it seems like the hole in the deck is forward of the circular
pattern of ¼ inch holes in the cabin liner below and that worked OK with the
dorade box and it works with the mushroom vent without fan albeit I don’t
think air flow is all that good…so with the Nicro solar vent / fan unlike in
the photos of your MKIII where the holes seem to line up, the hole which I
would have to make in the cabin liner would be right where the drilled holes
are now and that is almost adjacent to the forward bulkhead in the head so I
can’t go further forward to make the hole or the vent hole will be in the V
berth and the hole in the deck seems to be forward of that. I need to take
the current mushroom off to see by how much but if they don’t line up could
I still use the Nicro vent. My head is port side and the MKII was made with
matching dorade box vents one on either side and placed symmetrically either
side of the mast so there is now a mushroom on stbd side as well and I put
that mushroom there for added effect and to keep the symmetrical appearance
on deck

I had to enlarge the hole in the deck, so I used a drum sander chucked in a
drill. Excellent controllable tool for grinding fiberglass, fast-cutting and
hard to screw up in a big way. I taped a bag inside to capture the debris.

Touche' had an existing 3" hole covered by a square translucent panel in the

I want to put one on deck above the head. Used to be a dorade vent there
but I removed that…it was a real bad jib sheet catcher, and put a mushroom
vent without fan a few years ago. 4” should fit but I am not sure about
interior cabin liner on my 35 MKII. At present there are ¼ inch holes
drilled in it for ventilation through the mushroom, not very efficient flow
and maybe for best results with the solar fan I will need to cut a circular
section out instead, problem might be the forward bulkhead in the head and
the bulkhead between the head and the main cabin…not sure if the existing
cut out on the deck will be in the right location to line up and I don’t
want to get into doing a deck patch and cutting a new hole if possible…was
that an issue on your 35 MKI?

Exactly. That's the new style.

Note the openings vs the "feet" around the cover. Any line 3/8 or smaller
can get caught in the openings.

Have one in the head set to exhaust. Definite thumbs up.

The only issue with the new design Nicro's is they have opeings in the cover
which are prone to catch lines. Mine is mounted in the head which is
forward of the shrouds. Since I downsized my jibsheets this last time, the
sheet occasionally got caught in the forward facing opening. I solved the
problem by re-mounting the vent with the openings 45 degrees to center-line.
That way, the cover extends all the way to the deck at the forward part of
the vent.

I think another lister solved that issue with an additional cover that
covered the openings.
