I was crewing on a 40' IOR design boat (similar to a C&C) in the SYC Grand Prix
regatta (late fall boisterous weather) back in the late 80's.

We were going to weather on starboard in +-15 TWS and heavy traffic. Shortly
after the start a port tack J-29 was bearing off to cross behind when the
J-29's tiller extension failed. The J-29 rounded up into the boat I was on and
hit us soundly on the port quarter leaving a hole large enough to pass a 6-pack
through. With a little water coming in and an unknown amount of structural
damage we retired.

At the dock it was determined some epoxy and glass cloth would affect temporary
repairs. Overnight the work was finished and we sailed to second place
finishes in the 2nd and 3rd races of the 3 race regatta.

The owner protested for redress and the average of our finishes which would
give us a 2nd for the regatta. At first the protest committee was going to
disallow the redress request as the stand on boat shares a responsibility to
avoid contact. I had read through all the appeals in the back of the official
rules book and found an allowed redress for equipment failure leading to a
collision. With that in hand we got our redress and 2nd place.

Subject: Stus-List Tiller Stories

Years back we brought a Kirby 25 in here from Toronto to campaign.....it had a
tiller with a Ronstan extension....where the extension fitted on to the tiller
there was some 'duct tape'......it wasn't until season 3 that I decided to see
what was under the 'duct tape' .....in other words, why was it there in the
first place? Didn't seem to be needed.

Well, guess what.....the 'duct tape' was the only thing holding the Ronstan
tiller extension to the plastic base bolted through the tiller.
What a surprise! We had participated in about 70 races with the tiller
extension used all the time like this.

God bless 'duct tape'.
