Joining the thread a bit late, was on the Lake Ontario 300 for the weekend.
Amazing how Mother Nature can throw every type of weather into two days.

Anyways, I had my C&C 30-1 steering completely apart over the winter. Pedestal
off and dismantled for powder coating, everything refurbished or replaced. Even
so I had the smallest amount of play still on the rudder, maybe +/- 3/8" back
and
forth. The wheel didn't move. Turns out the groove cut into the rudder post and
the groove in the Edson quadrant are minutely different sizes. Asked a
knowledgeable
mechanic and was told that was usual. I needed to measure both grooves and
get a stepped key. The other solution was to use a table belt sander and machine
down the matching faces of the quadrant until it clamps the post, and possibly
drill and tap a hole for a grub screw / retaining bolt. I did the latter and it
worked.

Thank you all for the information. You guys (and gals perhaps) are really a
great resource.

Same thing happened to me.  My cables came so loose they actually fell off
the radial wheel.  The problem was the idler pulleys under the pedestal.
They mount on a plate which was made of mild steel.  The plate corroded so
badly the pulleys moved enough to loosen the cables.  I replaced my plate
with the same Edson part.  Edson also has a newer part with a stainless
steel plate.  Unfortunately for a 37+, it would not fit.  Check with Edson,
their tech support is first class.

I took the plate off, had it sandblasted and used POR 15. Great stuff.
