David, I agree with Kim - look up the definition of overlap. If he was bearing down on you on the same tack the line through his stern, perpendicular to the centerline of *his* boat should be behind your stern, and likewise a line through your stern perpendicular to *your* centerline would be behind his stern - very much overlapped.
