Dave,

Owning an older 38, I can't comment on the attributes or value of the 37+.
Other than to say I'm envious of the aft cabin and shower that don't fit into
my IOR hull. But I can comment on two other areas.

First, you estimated $20k to reduce the draft of the boat. I reduced the draft
of IMZADI from 6'1" to 5'3". I used Mars Metal. They suggested cutting off the
original keel to the desired draft and adding a torpedo bulb. Since they made
the original keel and had the profile information, they only needed to know how
much lead was removed so they could make the the torpedo the proper size to
retain the original stability of the boat.

We removed the bottom 10" of the keel, about 800#, with a Sawzall. The new bulb
was about 1150#, 5' long, 12" high, and 18-24" wide and I'd through bolted
around the original keel.

Cost was around $3600 for the bulb and shipping, though shipping was probably
cheap because they sent the bulb to the boatyard on the back of a load of new
keels going to Beneteau in South Carolina. Yard fees for the installation were
around $500. The boat was out of the water for other stuff, so I have not
included the haul out in the yard fees.

My other area of expertise/experience is the engine. Before retirement I was a
certified technician and trainer for both Cummins and Yanmar. Having replaced
the engine on Imzadi in 2010, I also have experience with Kubota based engines
from Westerbeke/Universal and Beta.

I chose a 36 hp Universal M35B for Imzadi, which weighs 15,000#. Cost was just
over $7100 including shipping, and installation labor was around $1500. Haul
out and storage while the work was done was another $700. I've not included the
cost for the new fuel tank, nor the cost for completely replacing the cobbled
up exhaust system the PO had done (and which caused the demise of the previous
engine).

I don't know what engine is in the boat now, but replacing the current engine
with a new bobtail version (reuse the existing transmission) of the same engine
- even a high priced Yanmar - should be well under $10k.

That said, Diesel engines are terribly tough things. Someone suggested the
seals would be shot from storage. Nitrile and neoprene seals wear out, not
dry out. And you mentioned the engine may have been overheated. How? Rerunning
hot enough to set off the alarm (say 220 degrees) because of pushing hard or a
pressure leak should have little or no impact as long as the engine was allowed
to cool off after the alarm sounded. Overheating because of a total loss of
coolant (warped cylinder head) or a lack of oil (rings, bearings, and cylinder
walls/liners shot) are another matter. I would also anticipate some internal
corrosion on the injectors, valves, and cylinder walls if the engine was not
properly fogged and prepped for long term storage, which may or may not be an
issue.

Have a good diesel specialist take a look at the engine and be sure you have it
run in a sea trial as part of the survey. Then evaluate whether the engine is
an issue or just a maintenance item.

Who knows, maybe you can get the anticipated maintenance cost as a price
reduction, or use it as a reason to walk away if you are not happy with the
results.
