A shim under the quadrant would be the best way to hold the rudder in place. Depending on how close your rudder quadrant is to the rudder tube, it may not drop much. I know access back there is horrible, but it is the best way to go. Running a line under the rudder would be my second choice. Keep it tight. The wet line is going to stretch a bit. The boat is staying in the water. Do I need run a line under the rudder to the stern cleats before I loosen the retaining ring? Or should I put a shim under the quadrant to limit the drop?
