My experience was the same. I picked the surveyor and made sure that he
worked for me (not the boatyard or the seller). In fact I picked two. The
first time, the surveyor called me from the boat (he did not even wait until
he got home) at told me to "run as quickly as I can"; so I did. The second
time, a different surveyor (different boat, different place) did a very
thorough survey, pointed a few things that may require attention, put
together a 25 page report with a ton of pictures (including things that
needed attention) and in a conversation recommended to buy. So I did (sight
unseen). I am glad that I did (both buy the boat and hire the surveyor).

That Accredited marine surveyor association is a good place to start

Jon,
Maybe the difference in our experiences buying a boat was that you said you
received a survey "from a recommended surveyor". Recommended by whom....the
seller's broker?

My surveyor was 'not recommended'......I chose him myself. When I notified
the seller's broker, the broker said to me on the telephone "Oh no, tell me
I don't have to deal with Peter K____th, he can pick pepper out of fly
sh_t". I chose the surveyor myself from the US Accredited Marine Surveyors
(probably got their association name wrong, but you all know what I am
talking about) .

I had a completely different experience than you did, maybe because my
surveyor 'did not have the seller's interest in mind'.

My surveyor had my interests in mind. I made sure of that! Sounds like
yours did not. Sorry to hear that, you will know better next time around.

could have gotten another $10,000 off the sell price. The moral of the story
is do your own survey.
