Hi Steven,

I looked around as well. As far as I can tell the SailSteer and Sail Time
functions are unique to the B&G mode., I just looked-over the Simrad NSS7
 Instruction manual (Here:
 http://www.simrad-yachting.com/Root/User%20Guides/NSS_OM_EN_988-10102-002_w.pdf
) And there's no wind rose / sail steer functionality / wind shift or
 any other sailing related stuff

It's pretty easy to download the instruction manuals on any chartplotter
(or any other boat equipment for that matter) you might be interested in.
In my book that's the only way to get the real skinny on what it does or
doesn't do. I do it all the time.

AFAIK: Navico is the "Holding Company" and it aims the brands as such:

 B&G : Sail boats
Simrad : Power boats - Cruisers
 Lowrance: Power boats - Fishing

The Wind Rose and sailsteer stuff is "Da bomb" for sailing.. As mentioned
on other posts, having your laylines automatically optimized for your
boat / conditions gets you there quicker even if you're not racing. And
also, with the 'Sailtime" function you get a realistic ETA to your
waypoint when sailing somewhere.. Good to know if you're racing / good 2
know if you're trying to make it in time for dinner / crossing the
Gulfstream on your way to Bimini before night fall..

I took a look at the B&G units at Defender, and in trying to get a handle
on overall price options, also at the wifi wireless module available from
various sources. I quickly learned that what appears to be the same
physical hardware, down to the part number, is sold for about 4 different
brands including B&C, Lowrance, Simrad, and Navico. Is there a difference
in packaged software? Is there any difference at all?

I've got a Zeus touch 7 version 2 and it's everything they say it is and
then some. In addition to navigation it's the integration point for all
 electronics on the boat.

You can get engine "gauges" displayed, you can control audio, it can
broadcast via wifi to your Ipad / android device which can be used as a
repeater / actually control it. It ties radar / sonar (High def bottom
scanning / imaging), autopilot, you can get live weather info via Sirius
with local wind / Sirius audio.. All in a nice touch screen interface.

I love the "sailsteer" functionality. Since it's aware of bearing / wind /
boat speed you give it a waypoint / it will show you the laylines. Long
and short when close hauled you get the optimized spot for your next tack
taking all into account including current. It works really well. The last
race I used it I saved 2 tacks compared to the guy ahead of me..

I typically mix nav with a wind gauge and a ton more data points all in
one screen. The touch stuff works well, you can use buttons too.

 It's pretty darn awesome :-)
