Tips:

Remove the old handrails.
Get templating material from your local canvas shop.  The material
resembles a clear(ish) plastic tarp.
Template both the old holes from both sides and send with both of the old
handrails to whitewater.
I had expected the rails to be symetric and for the wooden rails to show
stud placement well enough.  I was wrong.  The studs were close enough that
now that it is all said and done you can't see the old holes but the
project wasn't a drop in replacement.
I also took the time to drill/chew out the core and refill with thickened
epoxy.
