Hi Chuck
After 16 years have pretty much figured out how to tune the rig. The boat is very sensitive a bunch of factors but once dialed in does very well. Will be launching in 2 weeks and can provide some measurements, but a couple of basics apply 1) Boat at rest, no tension on mast, all rigging attached but loose, boom off, calm day, calm sea preferably at a dock. I find it helps to lightly apply waterproof grease to the turnbuckle threads. 2) Set upper shrouds so are somewhat loose – these will tighten as the outer shrouds are tightened. 3) Set mast foot and where comes through deck so have slight rake aft in mast – foot is slightly forward of midships of shoe, slightly aft at partners 4) Using main halyard, ensure mast is centered port and stbd. Cleat halyard so just touches caprail with equal pressure on both sides. Tighten shrouds with vigor while maintaining mast in vertical mode in relation to boat. Double check you are still in vertical mode with mast top centered 5) Ensure upper shrouds have minimal tension 6) Tighten lower shrouds for moderate tension 7) Moderate tension on back stay 8) Rig boom and sails 9) Ensure baby stay and back stay are properly tensioned 10) Go sailing. On each upwind tack lie on your back with your eyes looking up the mainsail mast track. Adjust the outer shrouds so the leeward one is moderate tension – not flopping about. Tack and adjust the new leeward the same turns. Keep track of your number of turns on the turnbuckles so you keep equal tension on both sides to keep mast top centered. 11) Adjust your leeward upper / lower shrouds to keep mast in straight column. 12) Of course pin / tape all your turnbuckles Hope this helps John and Maryann Legacy III 1982 C&C 34 Noank, CT From: CnC-List [r :[email protected]] On Behalf Of Chuck Borge via CnC-List Sent: Friday, May 08, 2015 9:58 AM To: CnClist Cc: Chuck Borge Subject: Stus-List C&C 34 rig tune Hello list gurus, Armed with my newly acquired Loos RT-10 and a decent bosun's chair, I plan to enlist a few strong friends to hoist me up the mast this weekend and tune the rig. Anyone have decent numbers for the C&C 34 shrouds? And what are we calling the above the spreader pair (upper & intermediate), lower section of the upper and then lower?
