I used a local loft (North) who took the measurements on the boat only after I
agreed to the sale with a 50% deposit. I was a little surprised but I had
decided that his price compared to the other local lofts was competitive. The
other local lofts gave me prices just based on the generic rig size I had but
they guaranteed it and wanted a large deposit as well.

He had an assistant with him and together they took measurements for about 2
hours, checking each critical one more than once. This was to be one of their
molded sails so if it was mis-cut it was history. They even measured the
curvature of my genoa track for this 155% head sail.

He told me the sail was to be made in Sir Lanka?

When it arrived, he put the spreader patches on correctly (this is not as easy
as it appears) and went out on a 12-15 knot day with it during our first race
to be sure the crew knew how it was to be trimmed. While we might have tumbled
to it eventually, it was nice having him there to convince us that yes, we are
supposed to bring the clew to the car, in spite of how tight it made the foot
on the shrouds, it should not be able to touch the spreaders (it couldn't since
it was cut with the spreaders considered), etc.

Given all the measurements he made, I doubt that I would have gotten them all
done correctly if I had to do it myself. Plus if he screwed it up, it was
his/North's problem to fix--no issue with MY incorrect measurements. I might
have saved some money using a mail order sail but to me, the piece of mind it
gave me was "...priceless." YMMV.
