My previous boat, a Catalina 30, was not setup for racing. I am trying to figure out this 37/40's backstays. What I surmise is this: When hard into the wind, the backstays should be brought back to the deck fitting just outboard of the jib winches with the windward ones pulled tight.
Is this correct? Do you move them forward incrementally as the wind comes abeam? Running downwind they have to be as far forward as the shrouds to remain clear of the boom. Any advice is welcomed. Also, if not racing do I need to be adjusting the hydraulic backstays? Brian Fry La Neige 37/40xl 1993 Havre de Grace MD
