Dennis:

Correct, mine is the Barient 22 New B Model.

You just reminded me of how I took these apart some years back......I did place wooded wedges between the drum base and deck to keep it in place. Will do it again, maybe tomorrow.

Thank you and thank everyone else.

Assume you have the Barient 22 New B model. The photoalbum has manuals for many of our winches. (Thank you, Stu) Go here:

Assuming a strap wrench and other methods fail, two more suggestions.

1. Secure a line to a cleat. Wrap it around the winch several times. Take it to another winch and tighten to hold the first winch from turning.

2. Drive several wooden or plastic wedges between drum skirt and deck.

On reassembly, coat the threads with Tefgel so it comes apart easily next time.

It's been a few years since I serviced my Barient 22 winches and I
can't remember how I disassembled them......specifically, how to
unscrew the 'Allen Screw' because when you try to do it, the winch
    turns.

If you don't have a winch handle that allows an 'Allen Key' to
drop down into it to reach the 'Allen Screw', how do you prevent
the winch from turning to loosen the 'Allen Screw'?

I bow to the collective wisdom of the C&C site to help me.....more
    importantly, my winches need lubrication.
