Depending on the sheave/axle configuration, it can be done.  I replaced several 
sheaves on my boat with the mast up.  My mast has a large metal cap on top, 
which holds the axles in place.  It took four screws to remove it.  Lifting the 
axles out wasn’t difficult, just a little nerve wracking.  Drop one piece down 
the mast and it’s game over.

Subject: Stus-List C&C 33 Main Sail Sheave

 

We have a main halyard sheave at the top of the mast that needs replacing. 
Anyone ever done this? Not sure where to look for parts and if it can be done 
without stepping the mast. Any advice is appreciated. I have a picture if it's 
allowed.
