Hi All, Yesterday I tried to send the below message to the list, but it was too big because of the spreadsheet of known 30-1s I attached to the message. So I put the spreadsheet at https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-NqAxQ6JxFTdFdscXlyQVNtWms . There is data on 117 out of the ~800 built.
Once Stu gets the database back online, we current 30-1 owners on the mail list can make sure the database includes our boats (I know it's missing info on some of them, e.g. mine). Stu replied to my message below but I'm not sure his reply went to the list. I may have overshot the mark on complexity :) So, Stu, back to the list of fields you mentioned below, would you consider adding: 10. HIN 11. Draft (standard or shoal) 12. Rig (standard or tall) - if relevant; I don't know if any C&C boats ever offered that choice 13. Spinnaker (yes or no) 14. Steering (tiller or wheel) 15. Engine Thanks again Stu for everything. And Rick Bushie - are you aware of this alleged 1970 30-1 in the database? Your hull #1 is stamped 1971. I'm wondering what to make of that. It's just so awesome. Second, if you'd ever like help with the database or the website etc. I could raise my hand (I'm a software guy). Regarding the database design - since boats pass from owner to owner, it would be ideal in my opinion to model the boat and the ownership separately. Ownership is a relationship between a boat and a person, with a start and end date. So I'd suggest a boat table with info about the boat, and an owners table with info about owners, and an ownership table relating a boat to an owner, with a start date and end date and boat name (since owners rename boats). When I first got my boat I wanted to learn about its ownership history, but could only find bits and pieces in documents that came with the boat, and from talking to the immediately previous owner. For the boat table I think it's most important to have good identifying information about the boat: its model, and ideally its entire HIN or at least its hull number and year. Sail number is a helpful additional identifier. Next most important in my opinion would be the most fixed elements of the boat's configuration: its keel or draft e.g. standard or shoal, its rig e.g. standard or tall (if applicable) and whether it's rigged for spinnaker, how it's steered, and its engine. For the owners table I think the owner's name and contact information would be most important. Next would be their location, and perhaps yacht club if relevant. Those could be interpreted as the owner's current (or last known) location and club, since people move and take their boats with them. It's probably not worth making the model more complex to capture such moves. The ownership table would be the valuable part. It would refer to a boat and an owner, and associate the start and end date of ownership, and the name of the boat under that owner. If the database had that, it could potentially capture ownership history as a boat changed hands. For what it's worth I attached a spreadsheet of known 30-1s and their last known ownership information, cribbed from your owners list pages and from bits of info gleaned off the mail list. There's probably some info in the spreadsheet that's not in your database, and vice versa (for example I only put the male owner's name in the spreadsheet). One thing that confused me is an alleged 1970 30-1 in your database, whereas Rick Bushie on the mail list owns hull #1 apparently, and it was built in 1971. How to reconcile? Anyway thanks again for everything. What fields do you want to see besides these: 1. Last Name 2. First Name 3. Mate 4. Home City, State, Country 5. Boat Name 6. Length 7. Model 8. Year 9. Hull number I want to keep the database and searches as simple as possible and not be confusing to our members. All suggestions greatly appreciated.
