I called the Nova Kool tech support folks. They said that the
refrigerant system is sealed and never loses pressure absent a
leak. After discussing my issue, which is kind of intermittent, he
concluded that it is probably the electronic control module going
away. This part is no longer available. No offer of service
made. He recommended replacing the whole thing.
That being the case, I'm not sure what I have to lose by recharging
it, aside from the cost of the hose/gauge and a can of refrigerant...

No house calls. You have to disassemble and ship to them. The fittings
are hermetic and lossless so you just wrench them apart and ship. They fix
and recharge and ship it back.
