Steve,
So to paraphrase some New Jersey wise guys" Who wants to know?" Are you
replacing the post? Are you adding a tiller arm for autopilot? Are you
putting in a new rudder bearing?
If you are planning something that has an interference fit with the rudder
post, such as a new radial drive wheel or autopilot tiller arm, you will
need the exact dimension to the nearest .001".
The rudder post is hollow and is likely 2.35" (pulling this from my memory
of when I worked at Edson 4 years ago) which was common for many C&C boats.
That said, 2 3/8" (2.375") is a fairly standard size for stainless pipe and
is easily mistaken for 2.35". There's only a few thousandths of clamping
tolerance for anything that needs to grip the rudder post so precision can
make a big difference in how something fits (or slips). C&C was also
unique in that would often add a keyway to the outside of the rudder post
for attaching fittings below deck, which is practice that is fairly common
with solid rudder posts, but is rarely done with hollow steel posts.

My best answer is to have someone go to your boat with a decent set of
calipers and measure the diameter, not just once, but several places (fore
and aft, side to side, etc.) If you are replacing a rudder post, you'll
absolutely need to get a precise measurement as the interference between
rudder bearing and post is critical for the boat to steer well.
Worst case scenario, call Edson. While they won't certify the dimension
since they didn't supply the rudders, but most of their data sheets
reference rudder post dimensions for the radial drive wheels.

Subject: Stus-List 1980 C&C 36 Rudder Shaft Diameter

I think it is two and a half inches, but I am many miles from the boat.
Does anyone know for certain?

Thanks,
