The original rudder shaft on my 38 mk2 was made from 2" schedule 80
stainless tubing. So it was hollow and the OD was just a scosh under 2.375".
Chuck Gilcrest's post seems to be pretty correct based on my experience.

I replaced my original shaft with a shaft and web that came from a 38LF
(which had lost the skins off her original rudder) which was the same OD but
made from solid stainless rod. South Shore sold the owner of the 38LF a
rudder that had a 2 1/2" shaft (IIRC) per the drawings they had in their
files. They then sent him a second rudder with the 2 3/8 OD shaft. So
apparently the 38LF ad two different sizes over the production run.

Anyway, your recollection of 2 1/2" OD might be correct based on my
experience, but you had best get someone to actually measure the shaft
before you do any replacement or additions.

Subject: Stus-List 1980 C&C 36 Rudder Shaft Diameter

I think it is two and a half inches, but I am many miles from the boat.
Does anyone know for certain?

Thanks,
