Marek;

My 27 has a deck stepped mast. She originally had only a steaming light and the
VHF antenna in the mast, and the connections were on the deck using a zinc plug
connector. Over the years before I bought her, the connectors got corroded and
began to leak into the core – resulting in a soft spot on the cabin top which
needed repair.

When I replaced the original mast with a Kenyon spar about 10 or 12 years ago
(long story) I installed anchor, steaming, and foredeck lights in addition to a
new VHF antenna. In my experience a wind instrument on a small boat like a 25
or 27 has little real value since the boat moves around so much in response to
wind and waves – which makes the electronic information unreliable.

The wires exit the mast about 3 or 4 inches above the mast step – again with a
rubber grommet to serve as a chafe guard. The tail of wires in encased in a
couple of layers of shrink wrap of increasing diameter to serve as chafe and UV
protection, and the pigtail goes through the deck using a Blue Seas cable clam
like this:

Once the wires are inside the boat, the VHF antenna is connected to a VHF cable
ending at the radio, and the electrical connections are mad on a terminal strip
that is mounted inside a small Radio Shack project box that is screwed to the
oak crossmember that spans the entrance to the head/forward cabin and provides
support for the mast step. All the connections are inside the boat, relatively
hidden from view, and dry and the cable clam has never leaked.

Unstepping the mast is no biggie: Unscrew the VHF cable to cable connection.
Loosen 4 screws for the DC connections to the terminal strip. Take 4 screws out
of the housing for the cable clam. Lift the whole wiring pigtail (and rubber
plug from the cable clam) out of the boat, and cover the hole in the cable clam
with duct tape.

Rick,

I confessed to this already once (and was threatened with keel hauling as a
result), so I will say it again: I don’t have a C&C anymore. I sold my C&C 24
three years ago and replaced her with, God help me, a Catalina C270. So I have
a deck stepped mast. This means that the idea of having a connection block is
out. Additionally, I step and unstep the mast annually - winter is not overly
mild in these parts.
